On March 17, 1860, a sailing vessel from Japan passed through the Golden Gate, the first time a Japanese ship had crossed the Pacific. This article from the SFGate website recalls the event and notes the commemorations of it this year:
150th anniversary of Kanrin Maru's epic voyage It appears there was more than a little culture shock on both sides, not surprisingly. -------------------- Jamie, Teahouse Okamisan

The Kanrin Maru and her captain on that first Japanese voyage, Kaishu Katsu, have now appeared in Ryomaden, this year's NHK taiga drama, about one of the men who went on to build the Japanese navy, Ryoma Sakamoto.
